Before I send it in to Spyderco Customer Service

Is there any inherent vertical blade play in compression locks? I just realized my SuperLeaf has a decent amount of vertical play when I grab the blade and move it up and down.

I wanted to make sure this is not supposed to be the case through the design before I send it in to the Spyderco team.

Thanks!

My Superhawk has none, so it must not be inherent to the design.

I hope they fix it for you, my paramilitary 1 had vertical play like you described. I sent mine in and they sent it back to me stating it was fine. They both have compression locks, so I hope your knife gets fixed. It would be cool if the stop pin was eccentric and adjustable to eliminate blade play.

Historically, I think it has not been uncommon. I don't know whether Spyderco considers it a warranty issue or not (but I know how you can find out ;) ).

Unless I am missing something, vertical play, while annoying, is not a safety issue with the compression lock.

Spyderco's warranty is very slow in my opinion. The gentlemen I talked to on the phone said he answers the calls and does the repairs. I sent a Para2 out March 4 and still nothing!

You do realize that they are preparing for Blade right? Also, they are not a huge factory with 100's of workers that are cranking things out 24/7. That is a common misconception about Spyderco. They are a small shop under 50 employees, but they do a darn good job on customer service the couple times I've had things worked on. One instance was a knife that I recieved from an online shop with a strange compression lock issue. The other was to send knives in to be sharpened. Both instances the work was incredible. I also got a call from Charlynn and she was super nice on the phone and was very helpful.

I'll live what what we decide on together. The lockbar wiggles back and forth when I move the blade and I would estimate the play at the tip of the knife is equal to an 1/8" of vertical up and down.

I don't feel like it's unsafe but my heart sank when I discovered it. Spyderco is responsive when I've needed them but the worst case is the SuperLeaf didn't break the bank if I end up stuck with it.

This might be the first knife I have ever had that knowingly had vertical play with no side to side play. It's usually the other way around with the added benefit of being able to adjust out the side to side in many cases.

I'll keep you guys posted :)

Before sending it back, I would at least try tightening the screws for the stop bar. Perhaps they are simply loose.

I think that was my problem with my Para 1. I tightened it up and now there is zero play in any direction. Same deal with my Para 2. I hope Spyderco takes care of you, which I don't doubt that they will.

Yes, tighten it up carefully. Don't leave marks that will make it look like you took it apart and get it replaced if tightening doesn't work.

You won't like it if you have to keep it and you're too honest to get rid of it by the usual sleazy methods. :)

That leaves CS fix.

I'm well aware that Spyderco is a small company. I'm not saying their customer service is bad by any means Many knife companies are small and they have great customer service as well. My knife is coming tomorrow and we'll see what happens:)
