hi,
i have recently started to carry a really cheap penknife everyday for the past few weeks and liked it, however due to its cheap make the tools on it have broken therefore for christmas i have asked for a leatherman surge (which i belive i am getting) so with this being a good quality all-rounder i would like to purchase a main knife for an edc carry so as my leatherman is a backup, however in the uk there are some strict laws on knifes so i have to keep to them, i belive that the blade has to be 3" or less and i think it cannot be a lock knife or Switchblades, automatics or 'flick-knives', gravity knives, balisongs or 'butterfly knives', push daggers, belt buckle knives, sword canes, disguised knives, or knuckle-duster knives (<<< got info from website so may be wrong) bearing this in mind could anyone please sugest any brands or particular knifes, i have no knife experience whatsoever in all areas from sharpening to steel type so please bear that in mind:), im also not wanting to spend over $60 and the knife may go through some vigorus ish work:)
very very much appreciated matt
p.s. i have been recomended the crkt edgie and the benchmade red series
IF THERE IS ALREADY A THREAD OPEN ON THIS TOPIC JUST REPLY WITH THE LINK TO IT PLEASE THANKS AGIN THIS IS VERY MUCH APRECIATED

In the UK you must need a reasonable excuse to carry a locking blade over 3", but you don't need one to carry a slipjoint under 3" in length, a swiss army knife would fit in very good, but if you want something very good try the spyderco UKPK, it's a bit more higher than your price limit but will be worth it.

I agree, the Spyderco UK was made specifically to be legal in the UK. Yes it is pricey but it is also worth it. Just looking quickly I found them on Amazon for $89 US.

Swiss Army Knife. Find one with the gadgets you like and you're in business. All great knives.

I don't own one and it's out of production but I have heard good things about the spyderco T-mag. Around the end they went on sale for about $45 US so I would imagine you could find one on e-bay for the price you are willing to pay.

yeah, the UKPK is such and awesome knife. I traded away my Caly 3 just to get one after trying it out in the passaround. Great ergos, good size, light weight. awesome!!

Hi Testno2283

Good to see another UK member on here

As to your knife choices, well for me it's usually the Spyderco UK penknife. Quality knife from a good company and specifically designed with UK laws in mind. Alternatively you can't go wrong with a Swiss Army knife - I like the Victorinox Soldier or the Climber if I need scissors.

Please let us know what you finally decide on.

Phil

UKPK again. It's a bit higher, but an excellent knife.

Other then that, some SAK's are wonderful multi tools. No single blade knives though.

+1 for the UKPK. I've admired it for years, but never bought one. Whenever I'm about to pull the trigger, I find a good deal on some other spyderco. Our family is planning a trip to Scotland in 2010, so I most likely will finally buy one for that.

My very thought.
Hello to U.K. Merry Christmas.

A Swiss Army Knife (SAK) Farmer in alox, this is compact but has everything you need:spear point blade, bottle opener, tin opener, screwdrivers, bail and SAW,awl too! Inexpensive and very well made.

If more traditional knives appeal to you then check the traditionals forum. The American maker W.R.CASE makes some fine single&multi blades which won't breach English law (don't know about Scotland but assume it's got similar laws?)Check Queen Cutlery another renowned US maker, or for a cheaper pocket knife but still with good quality there's the Chinese firm Rough Rider.

Whatever you decide, and like many of us your tastes will likely be broad, you can be sure that this condition known as Knife Fever will rage on and on,good luck!

Regards, W

I once went to a knife show and examined many CASE knives, they are very nice. They are all traditional though so if that is not what your looking for, then I say UKPK

Well I'm going against the grain here and am going to say a CV Case Stockman or Trapper would be a really good starting point. They fall in his price range, are easy to sharpen, offer the advantage of multiple blades (as opposed to the Spyderco UKPK)and shouldn't cause the least bit of problem with people seeing a pocket clip and thinking knife. Just my .02 cents.

Do yourself a favor and save up for the Spyderco UK Pen Knife (UKPK). It has a non locking blade, but it holds steady when opened, its S30V steel will meet your vigorous needs, and it feels great in the hand.

If you don't want to save the $ get a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. http://www.swissarmy.com/MultiTools/Pages/default.aspx?category=multitools& Look there and find the one that has what you need on it. I recommend the fieldmaster, super tinker, deluxe tinker, or farmer.

Here's an interesting alternative next to a UKPK or a Victorinox soldier: a classic sailor-style knife, with carbon steel blade and made in germany by Otter Messer. Less than $30 at worldknives, with brass anchor inlay. This kind of knife originated because ship captains broke of the tip of the sailor's knife blade so that they couldn't easily stab each other when in a brawl. This then evolved in a sheep foot style blade. I have a very similar french one, and there it's called "Le London".
I think it's fun and a bit wacky, and it's probably an amazing slicer.
