Beginer knife for edc

A Swiss Army Knife (SAK) Farmer in alox, this is compact but has everything you need:spear point blade, bottle opener, tin opener, screwdrivers, bail and SAW,awl too! Inexpensive and very well made.

I'm gonna second this one, since I have a Victorinox Farmer in Alox sitting in my pocket right now!

Great knife, great price, very handy.

Here's an interesting alternative next to a UKPK or a Victorinox soldier: a classic sailor-style knife, with carbon steel blade and made in germany by Otter Messer. Less than $30 at worldknives, with brass anchor inlay. This kind of knife originated because ship captains broke of the tip of the sailor's knife blade so that they couldn't easily stab each other when in a brawl. This then evolved in a sheep foot style blade. I have a very similar french one, and there it's called "Le London".
I think it's fun and a bit wacky, and it's probably an amazing slicer.

Although this is commonly held to be the reason tips of sailor's knives were broken off, probably there was another, more practical purpose involving shipboard safety. On a deck or rigging of a ship pitching and rolling in ocean swells, it's all too easy to stab oneself with a pointy knife while trying to cut something. That's why knives intended for nautical use are made with curved or rounded off points. For dealing with annoying pests on board, blunt instruments will have to do :D .

You are looking for a slipjoint less than a 3" blade.

There are some very good English brands that still make carbon steel blades.

Great knife, great price, very handy.

I'll third that. Have the tinker. I am allowed more or less free reign and carry several including a buck. The SAK is a good learning tool to get used to carrying, using and maintaining legality. Then when you are ready and have gone through the merits of many other great knives it will be simply, no easier LOL.

im gonna say go get either a sak farmer; blue, red, or silver. if that doesnt float you boat take a serious look at traditional knives. i nice stockman or trapper from case or queen will do the trick nicely i think. and very sheeple friendly.
