Recommendation? Beginner Advice?

It will take a long time (and potentially a good amount of money) to try to figure out what 1 knife you need. At the end, you'll probably realize it isn't 1 knife -> it's a pile of them.

Like everything in life - all things in moderation. Take your time and enjoy what you get until it makes sense to get something else. It's OK to have a lot of knives. Ask anyone here ;)

If you dont mind to pair a PM2 with a 940-1, one is great for work horse and one is great lightweight EDC. Or an Umnumzaan is a great first high end affordable folder. Bear in mind, if you ask here, the sky's the only limit or if you dwell long enough here you might find your bank might empty quite fast.

If you get into self defense with a knife, try to get training. Assume that whomever you might be dealing with defending yourself is bigger, faster, stronger, and has no respect for human life (yours). Get a gun if at all possible (legally of course).

Pay attention to the advice about folding knives being rather poor defensive tools. They can be more trouble than they are worth in that respect. The minimum I'd consider for reliable self defense is a fixed blade and some training. Ideally, you should EDC a firearm for self defense. Unfortunately, laws vary wildly from place to place. If EDC firearms are an option for you, explore that separately.

Once "defense" is eliminated as a desired parameter, you can explore EDC folding knives properly. We've got some relatively expensive recommendations so far. On the curve of diminishing returns, there are some sweet spots that can help you to explore what works best for you. I'd strongly recommend Civivi as a starting point. Their quality for the dollar tends to be very strong. Machining is excellent. Even with more expensive knives available to me, Civivi makes up a good chunk of my EDC rotation. Here are all the Civivis on BladeHQ. Have fun window shopping:

Before you buy another knife, buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker and a cheap strop. Learn how to keep your knives sharp.

Then pace yourself.
Try to have the discipline to carry and use you most recent purchase for a month or two before purchasing something else.

Once you start shopping the Bladeforums Exchange, you’re doomed. ;)

Enjoy the ride.

Folding knives are cute toys or for specialty uses.

I carry a few daily... But my core knife on me at all times, is a small fixed blade in a pocket sheath.

I carry a BK-14, but a CR2.5 would also be a great user, as would many other Bark Rivers, etc.

Couple of suggestions:

Spyderco - Delica, Endura, and ParaMilitary 2 or 3

Benchmade - Griptillian.

Kershaw - Dividend, Link, and Leek.

Fixed Blades - There are so many options like Becker, ESEE, and Mora I'll let you go from there.
