Beginner belt sander

Not what I would choose. But that's just me. IMHO, there are better grinders in the same price range. Actually I paid much less for my Craftsman 2x48.

No disrespect intended, but scroll through the pages here and you'll find several threads that have already addressed your questions.

Happy reading and welcome to the forum! :)

If that is your price range, definately look for the Craftsman 2x48.

I started with one ( a Craftsman ) last year and I'm still using it. It's not the perfect machine, but it works.

I used a 1 x 42 for a while then decided to get the Craftsman after reading all about it here....glad I did. One nice thing is you can run 1" belts on it for fine tuning handles.

Craftsman is 2x42, not 48. That said, it's not bad for your kind of situation. Modify the platen, throw away most of the guards, etc., learn to live with it running too fast, order some belts from trugrit, and you're good to go.
