Ok, I tried scanning the forum for info, but I actually ended up more confused. So, anyway, my grandfather had a wild notion about making horseshoes for the horses on my grandparents' farm. That didn't work out. However, grandma still had his anvil, forge, and hammers. His tongs are even around somewhere, but I can't find them. That aside, I'm looking for suggestions on materials to use. Scrap and RR spikes are plentiful on grandma's farm, but I know that scrap is unpredictable and spikes are too soft. I need a material that is relatively easy to work with for a beginner, that would create a general use knife, but more importantly, I would prefer if it were able to be quenched using water or brine. If you can give me a brine formula, that would be great. Any advice would be great.
