Thanks invictusmaneo. Are the replacement belts expensive? I'm worried that only 1" of grinding surface will mean blowing through belts very quickly and more passes to achieve the same results as a wider belt. what do you think?

Larry, I just saw all the pics you put up of your modified Craftsman 2"x42" sander. Could you describe the tools and method you used to take that chunck out of the platen?

Ok i am gonna answer this and your earlier post. I purchased it new from
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00921513000P?keyword=bench+sander it is right now 139.99 I paid 119.99 it was on sale.

not sure on the HP but i bet Sears has the specs on it.

also I went to Bruce Bump's and he had me put a belt on it then scribe the platen to match the belts width. Then we cut the excess off with a Metal cutting band saw and ground the edges flat using a belt sander and disc sander. just start the inner cut even wiht the arms that hold the platen on and dont forget not to cut them off or you'll be purchasing another one. (I am sure it voided the waranty when we did the cutting)

also here is a pic of the knife i did using the equipment in the photo it is just rough cut now. I am waiting to get a different drill bit from Fastenal before i drill the pin holes and then will send to heat treat.

Thanks for the info Larry. The knife looks great. I hope that I'll be able to do as well when I get a sander set up.

belts arent that hard to find--jantz supply has a large number/variety of them..my lowes didnt have shit and this was all they carried for table top sander s(hard to believe huh) and neither does sears. it works just fine, can be tricky if you dont pay attention/keep it moving becuase the 1" surface grinds such a narrow spot.

my biggest gripe is the crappy platen

There is a guy on Ebay selling them for 10 Belts for 12.50 he has 24 - 400 grit. not sure how they are I have not used them but plan to buy some and try them out.

I got the ones am using from supergrit.com spent a little more and with only 42 inches of belt I went through them kinda fast.
