Beginner needs HELP!

I used Wayne's $50 knife shop book and this forum as my main references on the first batch of knives (one complete, another on in final handle finishing, 2 more heat treated bare blades) and with a little explanation of MAPP torch heating I'm good to go.

I'm using old saw blades for stock right now. It's steel, it's got history and character. Works good :)

koyote, you would have a field day in my grandpas garage/shop with all the saw blades and tools laying around.

Some old dude who made knives back in Arizona in the 80s told me that old saw blades made the best mid sized utility knives ever.

But I wouldn't want to cut up good sharp usable saws :)

he has so many blades lying around its not even funny. there are a few my uncle threw into the scrap pile. i almost wanted to grab them. they are 10" blades.

Just to let you fellows know,
The "Saw Blades" people are talking about when they are talking about making knives aren't the 10" and 12" blades of today. They are talking about two man pull saws and mill blades . The pull saws are five to eight feet long and the mill blades are two to six feet round. The small round blades for table saws and radial arm saws are not steel for knives. Hand saw blades can be used for thinner blades, like fillet knives.

I went to the library today, they didn't have any books on bladesmithing but they did have some books on blacksmithing so I got them (for 2 weeks at least).

good job man. keep your nose in those books and keep searching on here. HEHEHEHE!!! dont forget to visit a couple makers shops and watch them at work and ask questions. that helps you jump ahead quickly.

I'm local, but I'm SO NOT experienced. Still, I guess I have a shop and my heat treating seems to work.....

I found a blacksmith not too far from me, so some time this year I might get lessons form him. Also, what size forge is needed to make swords?
