Hey I'm making a new knife and am think about using AEB-L steel and want to know if that's a good steel to use also if it's ok to quench in canola oil. Should I heat up the canola oil?

If you plan on doing your own heat treat I would start with a simple carbon steel like 1084 or something. I'm using D2 and 52100 as a new maker but am going to send off for heat treat. AEB-L seems like its best with some cryo to get the HT where you want it.

You can find heat treat recipes on the web. It may be far better to send it off to a professional though.

You can oil quench but I don't think cona oil will work. It's best to plate quench to help keep things straight. You will need a heat treat oven as a torch or forge are not able to heat evenly or accurately enough to maximize this steels abilities. If you're using a torch or forge and want to use canola oil then pick up some 1084. $17 for 48" from njsteelbaron.com.
