Hello to all you brilliant makers out there. I have been heavily considering making my first knife and i'm the kind of guy who dives head first into things so i'm going to cut the middle man and try to make a Ti framelock flipper. This isn't an insult to makers who have spend years perfecting folders and I know I will not produce anything close to an RJ or Todd Begg or any makers of the like. I would just like to see if I can makes one. My questions are what are the essential tools that I won't be able to make a folder without and also are there any makers on here who started with no experience? I have the option to take a metalworks and machining course so would it be worth my while to do so? Any info is appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Filling out your profile would be a good start.

Your ability to make a titanium frame lock flipper with minimal equipment and no experience is going to be a long shot.
I would seriously suggest you take that course, and a lot of the reasons why I made that statement will be made clear.

Welcome to the forums.

All makers started with out any experience......:p

Just ribbing you a little - good luck on your build.

Glad to hear your want to make a knife.
Titanium is one of the hardest medals to work and with simple hand tools you may be setting yourself up for a disappointment?
That class sounds like a great idea and may I suggest you start with a nice fix blade knife of Carbon or Stainless Steel.

1084 steel, Hand files, hand saw, small drill press, lots of sandpaper, Torch, one brick forge and a big can of elbow grease was what I started with.

Keep us posted & good luck.

Everyone starts with no experience.

A flipper is a very ambitious project for a first knife.

Folders are complex, and even highly skilled makers run into problems making them.

I would suggest trying to make a fixed blade first.

Have you considered starting with a kit? It may not give you the exact knife you want but it will give you an opportunity to see how they are assembled while also seeing as a canvas for customization.

Dude you're nuts, its good to have ambitions but you be taking a shot in the dark with a frame lock folder!
