Well, I'm sick of studying for finals so I took the evening and engrossed myself in carving.
SUCCESS!!!
I finally got this thing goin'! It's still in a rough shape, but I'm not going to do much more work on it- I like that it's a bit rough. It's secured solely with the jute. The bowl was deepened to about an inch, maybe a bit over, by coal blowing.
When I was carving out the stem, luckily the grain was straight down so I could just match it up to make sure I was carving 'in the same place' for the opposing side to meet up.
I also got lucky when I had to split it, it went right down the middle. I was lucky in how I chose the grain.
But I lit the dang thing up this evening and smoked me a bowl of a cavendish blend! Came out great!
So yes, you can make a pipe out of just wood and cordage, and a good knife!
The only tool I used for this was the Brian Andrews Bushcrafter, and I can't speak highly enough about it. This took tons and tons of carving, and every grip style that I know of. It still shaves here at the finish, and I developed no hot spots. This is truly 'my knife'.
So go give it a whirl!!!
