I figure at this rate, I'll be the best in the world by December.:foot::D

Anyway, I had a couple hours of free time, and decided to go ahead and try grinding my first blade (Well actually the second, but that was a while ago, and it was a catastrophe.) It started out longer, with a different shape and a different grind, but somehow it ended up as the masterpiece you see here. It's actually just a piece of 1/8" flat-stock weld steel I had laying about, so it's not really a knife as much as a paint scraper, but anyway.

Behold, and stand (or sit, whatever) in awe.

Eh, I'm going to go bend some plastic now. :D

Shappe looks good. You need to move the bevels farther up the blade sides. The edge has too much edge angle like it is.
Nice first/second job.

Ah, but there's no perspective. :D The handle is at least an inch too short to hold. It started with a bit of a guard, but for reasons unknown, I started the grind on top of it.

Yep. I was going to try a flat grind, but got lazy. The only belt I have for my 2 inch grinder is the one that was on it when I bought it, as I haven't seen a need to use it much. I have buttloads for my 1 inch HF, but I'm too impatient for that. Gonna get some belts, some steel, and make a jig, and have another go at it soon. Now if I could just buy some spare time I'd be set. :)

...wow... it is so amazing. It is as if I had looked upon God himself. Looking at that made me feel small and insignificant. I'm going to go hug my family now...

In all seriousness, that is a good first attempt. Go try it again with a stick of 1084, heat it in your grill (I guess that will work. There was a HT oven in my shop long before I ever made a knife. Bright red hot, around 1500, is what you're shooting for), quench it in some oil, then go cut some stuff. You'll see what all the fuss is about.

Your welcome. :thumbup::p

Thanks. I'm better with materials that melt at 200 degrees. I had some 1084, but it got, um, mangled in my true first attempt. I guess I need to order more than one 12" bar at a time. :rolleyes:

I'm gonna order some actual knife steel and give it another go when I get a chance. I've got a JTH7 torch and am gonna have a go at a one-brick forge at some point. I've been meaning to try to make my own blade for quite a while now, but other things keep popping up. I'll get it one of these days.

I just threw my Burr King the garbage.... You could always slot a piece of brass or SS and pin it in place for a guard.

I'll tell ya what. Since I've put you out of the business anyway. I'll trade you this awesome blade for that now useless Burr King. I'll even include a signed CoA. Heck, in a year I'll be so famous you'll be able to sell the knife and buy yourself a small island somewhere.. You need to cover shipping for both items of course. :cool:

That's alright. I don't think I want to put that much more work into it. Cause it's, um, perfect like it is. Yeah that's it. :D
