I WAS GRINDING ON SOME BLADES TODAY,JUST POPPED IN MY HEAD WHILE THE SPARKS WERE FLYING,LETS TRY A WATER QUENCH! MY FIRST TIME AND LAST TIME ,THE OLE 1095 DIDNT TAKE A COOL BATH WELL,THESE ARENT MICRO CRACKS THESE ARE CREVIS,LMAO! LESSON LEARNED DONT MESS WITH HOT STEEL AND WATER,THE RESULTS ARE BAD!:D

when i was experimenting with different quench media, i always used scrap pieces that i ground to resemble a knife just to see how they reacted before moving on to an actual blade. the first time i quenched a piece in water i didnt get any cracks but the piece was so brittle it broke easily. it looks like your knife hated taking a bath and let you know it :D. i hope you didnt get steamed skin somewhere.
 
Try as Richard J, but try 130° brine. I have done a couple of small 1095 plates that were 1" x 2", and about .030 thick. Perfect results on both, and with a 36 grit finish also. They were red-orange when they went in.
 
nah, that was something to do, its oil quench from here on out,it was just a peice of steel i have plenty more,i think my edge thickness came into play aswell it was thin! no biggy
 
I tried that brine thing at over 130F and it didn't work for me... I plan to use oil next as it was my first real knife making attempt... I have smaller cracks in my blade but it chips anything resembling an edge so far... It was an attempt. Still shiny and curved well...
 
Yea I tried the brine thing too, mixed it according to a recipe found here, pre-heated to 130 degrees and stuck that puppy in. I swear the tip almost came out the water before I could get it all in it bowed so much. Pulled it back out to stare and heard the tink of a double death for that one. It broke just about in half. I have since edge quenched some 1095 in brine successfully but the best results I can get are 1 blade for every three or four I quench. So it was back to Parks 50 for me and no more headaches.
