I noticed that my best friend of over a decade had a distinctive lack of knives in his pocket, so I decided to get him one for his birthday. I ended up picking him up a Buck 110 since I don't know his specific preferences on what he carries and you really can't go wrong with something that classic. What do you guys think of knives as presents for non knife people?

I like gifting knives, but unless I'm positive something more knife-y will be appreciated, I generally stick to Swiss Army knives and the occasional Opinel.

With SAKs, it's fun to think about the recipient's life, what they do, and what tools might be useful for them. I like that part of the gift-giving process a great deal. :)

I only gift knives to those that I know use tools. That way I know it will see use :-)

Bingo! Right on the money.

The only other knife I have gifted out to a non-knife guy was a Schrade-Walden trapper with the spey I turned into a cap lifter.

Nice gesture, but a 110 is a brick, and I'd bet a non-knife guy isn't going to edc it.

A non knife guy would not likely edc any knife aside from a dragonfly or the like.

I bet he will see this in his pocket for holidays and events though.

You can not go wrong with knife as a present, as far as person is a male IMO. Especially with such classic folder as Buck 110. Man and knife always had a natural bond, regardless of issues such as if the man is interested in knives or not.For "non knife" guy, knife will always be a usefull tool, at least, for somebody who loves knives - it is also a passion.

That is stereotypical and sexist. Here's a secret for you. Some guys DON'T like knives. And some women DO like knives.

Ok. Let's not let this thread turn into a men vs women argument. Remember to keep it civil please

I buy knives as gifts for the right people. I know lots that would find great uses for them, and lots that would never carry one. And then there are some that will keep it and not carry it because of the sentimental value, which is totally fine by me. Do what you want with your tools, gifts, toys, etc.

It may be a brick, but it's a nice brick. If you stripped away my Benchmades and Spydercoes and made it so that I couldn't get any more and told me a Buck 110 was all I could carry for the rest of my life, I could live with that

they're like those large table lighters....they work but i wouldn't lug one around unless I ran out of options.
And i wouldn't buy one for someone as an edc firesource 😆

Yes, you could, but a non-knife person could live without a brick like that in his pocket. If his choice was no knife, or brick, he might very well go no knife.

Particularly when that brick just cuts. As opposed to something like a Vic Classic, which weighs next to nothing and cuts, picks, tweezes, files, scissors, and sometimes screws.

Superdave nailed it, since you are asking.

I gifted my nephew his first good knife at 16, a spyderco dragonfly. Everything I've seen him since he has had that knife with him. That was 2 years ago.
