speaking VERY generally...

how many khukuris could one buy, or moose knives one make for about the same dollars as the cost of ONE sword, to be used for ONE event ONE time?

The HI Basket-hilt Claymore! ;)

Well, since you have the OK fer buyin' some big steel, aside from Kis's pleas fer reason (I know, Kis -- I have half a dozen racked on the wall, starting to catch up to my spear collection
icon4.gif
), and if you intend to go HI, I think any from the product line you like would work. Even the tarwar, which is perhaps more brutish a weapon, is a very accurate copy of the medieval chopper called the Falchion (which is an offspring of the earlier Falcatta and Kopis).

SAFETY FIRST: Whatever you choose, please consider the use of peace-bonds. this can be a leather thing, piece of cord,, or a nice matching ribbon. It goes thru the belt loop/frog/mounting point on the scabbard, and ties round the handle and over the guard. Keep s the sword from bopping you in the head if ya hafta bow and say a few "Evening, Miladys," no one wants sharp steel dropping out n' such. I assume there'll be alcohol, and folks with the period equivalents of cocked/loaded rifles with no safeties makes me wanna go with yer leather armor outfit. And a shield.;)

For ease of sitting and such, a short sword or long knife would be easy and comfprtable, and carry a staff or some other stick. a simple tunic, and hey--yer Little John!

There's always sweat pants and a blousy shirt, add car antenna rapier to taste. (eheehe)

Hope the move went well, Pen.

N2S: Nice cinq. So where on yer webpage is that stuff fer sale? You been holdin' out on us.;)(Never seen that one b4)

Sweet, those are the best pictures I've seen of the Tibetan Sword. I didn't even know it had a fuller.

Hey Dan, how about one of these?

patang1.JPG

Love that name, "Patang", reminds me of the sound produced when some cartoon character gets smacked with a frying pan.:D

Dan, if you want to borrow one of those spitoons, er, patangs, I'll be glad to loan you one. If this thread is just rationalization for new steel, forget I mentioned it.

Guys - I am about ready to trade away my 25" AK if I have to, to get my hands on one of these swords.

Sarge - I have gone back and forth many a time on that patang. I agree that it would look very good with the costume.

That's why I need your advice. You know what it takes to get all dudded up for one of these events...:D

Would I still want to get a baldric if I took a short sword?

"Would I still want to get a baldric if I took a short sword?"

Double wrapped sword belts are cool Dan.

Still, even with a short sword, a baldric is comfortable and practical. Standard kit on your belt when in period garb includes a dagger, pouch, and usually a tankard slung from a strap. Not bad if you stick to a reasonably sized dagger, go with a light, thin, pewter mug/tankard (usually pick 'em up cheap in thrift shops), and don't load your pouch down with stuff like a camera, or, gasp, cell phone.
At any rate, you're going to have enough stuff hanging on your belt that adding the weight of a sword to it is going to get uncomfortable as the day wears on. A baldric is more comfortable, and offers the added convenience that you can disarm quickly if you like, without having to take off your belt and juggle everything else on it to take your sword off.

Long winded answer to a simple question, I know, but folks tend to make more informed decisions when they've got the scoop, the whole scoop, and nothing but the scoop.;)

Sarge - you've about got me on the Patang in a double-wrap belt idea...

it's between that and a short tibetan sword in a baldric

or maybe both!

Sarge - wanna hear a funny...

The other day when I called to talk to Yvsa he told me a few stories about a certain "Jimmy" Clifton... :D

Lil' Jimmy...

I love it...

:p:p:p:p:p

Lil' Jimmy, hee, oh I see a full scale quackfest coming out of this one.;)

Back on swords a minute. A Patang is 20" long and weighs 2 1/4 lbs., that's big enough that most sheeple will steer well clear of you. Snag you one and rig up a nice sword belt for it, problem solved. Stick a JKM-1 in your boot for eating and such. If you've got one you don't mind "tinkering" with, try this; grind/file/sand, whatever, the handle down into a flattened oval cross section, convex the edge and make the point "pointy-er". It'll feel good in the hand, ride comfortably in the boot (in a homemade flat scabbard), and pretty much get the job done for whatever you need a knife for. Keep the Patang polished up so the glow from the light reflecting off it's blade will hurt people's eyes. Shortsword for show, boot knife for go, best of both worlds.;) :D
