Belknap axe?

Ok I have an old head I found and figured I would re handle it.

My question really goes, dose anyone know anything about Belknap and heat treats or quality? Its a hard edge, a file dont really cut it.

Worked for my father-in-law in a Belknap Hdwe. store while in grad school (outside of Lexington, KY). The now defunct company was headquartered in Louisville, KY and had stores throughout the Southeast. The store name for many tools was "John Primble", and, it seemed to me, varied in quality from tool to tool, depending on manufacturer. Don't know anything about the axe you describe.

And the handle says "BELKNAP" in cursive. Any one have Information on it

Belknap's are fairly sought after axes.
Made of high quality steel.

Back in the day nearly every maker sold replacement handles. If the head itself doesn't say Belknap then you don't know for sure who made it. In fact even if the head says Belknap you don't necessarily know who made it. I've seen Belknap branded Tommy Axes that look identical to the True Temper Tommies. I'd bet anything that True Temper made them for Belknap.

If it doesn't say 'Belknap' on the head I bet that is just a Belknap replacement handle.
