Anyone used them and what could the steel possibly be? I do not think they are case-hardened. I just got a bunch. Any feedback greatly appreciated!
Just learned they are high Carbon, I know it is always a crap shoot but I will take a chance on one and see.
Got an email from their distributor here, 1045 medium Carbon , not the BEST, but we will see what we can pull out of it.
I've seen this posted for 1045: austenitizing temperature of 1475-1550ºF (800-845ºC) and oil or water quenching Flame and induction hardening may be carried out by heating quickly to the desired case depth and quenching in water or oil. This should be followed by a tempering treatment at 300-400ºF (150-200ºC) to reduce stresses in the case without affecting its hardness. A surface hardness of Rc 58 may be obtained by this treatment.
