It's probably somewhere in the archives (but I can't find it) but I need to know a couple of things about the use of graphites in various applications.

First as a backing for the platen; rumour control says that it will help belts run cooler...does it? Does it affect the 'squareness' of the cut because of a pad between the belt and the platen?

Second; what about graphite applied to the back of the belts. Any tracking or dust concerns here?

Third; toxidity...as my shop is in the basement of my house I really don't want the kids to start headbanging because of me (I can hear the Mrs. now..."It's all your fault"). Besides they've got lots of other reasons!

On a related but non-graphite matter; Grease sticks...do they work as advertised? Will they reduce build up and improve the finish? Is there a grit size that's effective/non-effective?

I realize that y'all are busier than one armed paper hangars but if you could see it in your heart to help out a poor, old wannabe blade maker I would sure appreciate it. Thanks

Graphite pads make great.....! Havn't figered out what yet. Surface grind a chunk of hardened untempered OCS (5160)and bolt it to your platen and forget about it. Yea almost forgot, DRILL THE HOLES FIRST. I forgot to the first time.

The graphite pad on my Grizzly has already outlived its usefulness. I've had it a week, and I'm stripping it off tonight. It conforms to what you're grinding. I used to put graphite on the platen of my Craftsman to speed it up, but I didn't see any difference when I stopped.
