Heres a belt ax forged from a horshoe rasp. The rasp was hot cut to the length i wanted then wrapped around a drift,a piece of 1095 was inserted to the eye and forge welded together. The handle is stained hickory and the sheath is 9 oz. hand saddle stitched domestic leather. It snaps on both sides for right or left carry.$95.00 includes shipping. Please PM me if youd like it.

This is a nice looking axe and I am intrigued by it's look.

I am unfamiliar with the lingo used for axes.

I don't quite understand your description of "wrapped around a drift,a piece of 1095 was inserted to the eye and forge welded together". I believe I've heard of different steels being used for the axe's cutting edge or blade but in your description it sounds like it might be used on the part that is around the axe's handle. If so, then what benefit does adding the 1095 there provide?

I'm sorry if these sound like dumb questions but I do not know a lot about axes. I have a few but do not know the terminology, etc.

Also, what is the approximate weight of the axe head and the length of the blade and handle? What are the pieces of metal on the handle made of and are they primarily for decoration?

Its not a stupid question at all.The rasp is wrapped around a drift that forms the shape of the ax eye and like a sandwich a piece of steel(in this case 1095)is placed between the two halves of the rasp and forge welded.Traditionaly iron would be wrapped arnound a mandrel and a piece of med.to high carbon steel would be inserted for a cutting edge.I put a larger piece of high carbon that extends from the eye to the cutting edge so over the years you dont run out of the hardened steel.I hope this helps,if not ,feel free to ask more questions, thats how we all learn. Also ,the whole ax weighs about 1 1/2 lbs and is about 18 inches over all.The cutting edge is aprox.3 1/2 inches and yes the brass tacks are just decorative.

Thanks for the detailed description. I'm glad you don't mind sharing your knowledge, etc. I may try to get one of your axes at a later date.

Good score drducati.
