Anyone have any tips htey would like to share?

Ive been struggling with a 20cv blade, Ive put about 10 hours into finishing the blade.
The bevels are ground on a radius platen. I am having a hell of a time getting a nice looking belt finish on this blade.
Really I would like to do a hand finish along the length of the blade but after about 4 hours of trying to remove all the a160 gator belt scratches I gave up and went back to the grinder! I took it neatly down to a45(220 ish grit) and it looks , ehhhh a little to rough for my tastes, all three of my a30(500 ish grit) belts are to worn to have much an effect on this steel. Any ideas on a different belt I could try?

You can coat belt surface with polishing compound. At grit #400 You'll get nice semi-polished surface.

how were you trying to get rid of the a160 ( 120 grit) scratches before you went back to the grinder ? i usually go up to 1000 grit on the machine and then hand sand.

I have a couple curved sanding blocks that lets me get into the bevels, I use 220 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit, its pretty easy with aebl. Seems like I was getting no where with the 20CV.

Take it to 220 ceramic, then put a piece of leather over the platen with double stick tape and use silicon carbide belts at low speed. It will take a few belts, but they are usually not expensive.

My mistake, sorry for wrong answer... Other way is to use semi-hard or hard felt wheel with diamond polishing paste. Can be purchased on ebay like here. It starts at 320 grit and works on any hard surface. I believe it will work on 20cv too.

I tried the leather on my platen, It was working well enough until my tape gave out and the leather went flying. Old tape, i think the adhesive was suspect. Then I realized I had a 600 grit cork belt stashed away. That worked ok too.

The main difficulty for me with this is I dont think Ive seen any belt finish knives in these steels and pictures are hard to judge a belt finish. I just dont really like the look of it much, but will continue to experiment.
Jesenius , thanks for your input...Once I have some compound I am gonna try that with some of my worn belts.
Avigi I was looking at this site http://www.supergrit.com/products/products_belts-Trizact they are saying a45=280 grit

Vanadium carbides are harder than AO abrasive, SC abrasive is only slightly harder. Try the silicon carbide belts over the leather, it's a little slow, but works.

M390 has a fair amount of vanidium carbide.

Here I am again with a 10" cpm20cv blade. I just picked up some silicone carbide belts in 220 grit and a couple of the blaze plus 120 grit. Also a 220 grit silicone carbide cork belt, that seems pretty interesting. Ill post results

Have you tried loading your cork belts with some black compound? I have not tried it specifically on 20 CV but have finished 3V and S35VN this way and like the satin finish that it produces.
