hi,

Long time lurker (been doing a lot of searching and reading) first time thread starter living in Australia.

I am after a belt and disc sander or linisher.

There are a few options so I was hoping to get some good advice from the helpful members of this forum

I want to start making knifes so the machines would be used to sand and shape the handles and knife blades and sharpening (but you knew that:D).

I could afford to go to $350 but if a $200 machine would be all I need then I would prefer to keep the extra for some more tools.

There are a few eBay machines going for $150ish names like draper and no name in a 4inch belt 6inch disc.

Timbecon, and Hares & Forbes have $200 machines in the same size but I can't find much in the way of reviews for them. The H&F one is a Scheppech and the Timbecon is a Sherwood.

Carbatec have a 4inch belt 8inch disc sander on special for $319 (down from $479 )

Part of me always wants the best of anything but it's going to be an expensive year so if a $200 or less machine will serve me just as well as a $300 machine then I will take the cheaper one.

Any advice or reviews of the machines or brands I am looking at would be appreciated.

These sanders are all 4" wide. They would be very difficult to work with. I know because I used one to begin with. Search around and see if you can find a machine that has a 2" belt for either a 72" or 48"belt. The disc sander isn't as much use as you might think. Some fellows have gone with a 1" belt which I believe would be better than a 4", However when all is said and done you may not be able to find much besides the 4" sized ones in Australia. In which case check out the power for the price. Steel grinding does require more than wood sanding. Frank

Multi tool linisher and a 1 hp bench grinder, you can get these as a package deal from hare and forbes and then convert the linisher attachment to use 72 inch belts. if you google chris crawfords web site i think he has a picture of what i've described. only problems are 72inch belts arnt available in Australia (just order them from the states, tracy mickley @ midwestknifemakers supply is where i've bought mine from and they're cheaper from the us anyway) secondly the bench grinder spins a bit fast however you may be able to fit the linishing attachment to a slower speed face mouint electric motor. hope this helps:thumbup:

here's the image from chris crawfords site, hope the link works:http://www.chriscrawfordknives.com/Shop_Image_PopUp.asp?Rec_Num=39

That's great advice guys, I was completely on the wrong track:confused:

I thought the 4 inch belt was the important part.

You can buy the multitool with a 2 x 36 inch belt and 7 inch disc for about $200, I could then put that on a 2nd hand grinder until I could afford a better one.

Just to make sure I am back on track.

You use the 2 inch belt to shape the scales and blade, and then could use the disc to make sure the scales were sanded flat before assembly?

Thanks again
Trent

ps thanks for putting the link to the picture up boilermaker, I had a look at Chris's site but couldn't find it

I also bought a 4" wide grinder to start. Should have looked around, but didn't. No regrets, but lesson learned.
