belt grinder opinions please...

this sander is available on craigslist near my home. anyone have an opinion on it? $50. my other option is a harbor freight belt/disc combo....

A grinder like that costs between $100 and $250 new, depending on who makes it.

While it's not the best for making big knives because of the size, it's pretty good as a starter and for doing small work. You can strengthen up the platen if need be. Apretty good selection of belt grits is available, too.

If everything works and the wheels aren't chewed up, $50 is a bargain, IMHO.
 
it looked good in person, so i bought it. it has steel wheels and is smaller than it looks in the photo, at least to me. it's got to be better than files and a hacksaw.
 
I assume it's 1x42" belts since it looks like every other 1x42 grinder. Disc size varies a bit. Here's a good source for belts:

For discs, there are adhesive-backed PSA or you can get what's called feathering adhesive and glue regular sheet onto the platen and trim to fit with a knife.
