belt grinder wheels

Probably because of where the power is. ?????

This shouldn't really matter either as far as 1ph vs 3ph is concerned. You can find up to a 1.5hp VFD that will run off of 110VAC or 2hp to 3hp that will run off 220vac.

Don't think I said anything about variable speed. My bench is the only space I have for the grinder that is close to a wall plug. So I'm limited to 15 amps or less. Trying to do this on a budget I was thinking of trying to find a cheap used table saw. What rpm motor would be the best to use ? I know mine is 4500 rpm, maybe that's to much.
What does your workbench location have to do with whether you want variable speed on your grinder or not?

You said you couldn't run 3 phase due to your work bench location. 3 phase motors are powered by a vfd for variable speed. 1 phase in, 3 out.
You can run up to a 1.5 hp motor on 110VAC with a 15 amp breaker, no problem. It's going to likely cost a bit more, but it's worth it.

1.5hp AC motors (1 or 3 phase) will come in either 1725-1800 RPM, or somewhere around 3600 RPM. If you're going with a single speed set up, 3600 is way too fast IMO, at least for finish work. 1750 with a 3-4 step pulley is much more manageable.

I have a 4" wheel mounted direct on the motor. I just tried relocating the .5 hp motor that I have and got it going but not that great. The Ironhorse motors that you mentioned sounds great. Who do you buy them from ?

The Iron Horse brand of motors come from AutomationDirect.com. As far as I can find, they seem to be the most reasonably priced 3 phase motors, brand new. You could probably find one of a different brand cheaper used, such as craigslist, or if you're lucky, on eBay.

Thanks, Ironhorse looks like a good deal, especially with free shipping. There is a shop I need to check out when I go to town on Thursday. Hopefully I'll have something figured out by the weekend.

Found out advertised hp means nothing. I picked up a used Canadian made 3/4 hp for $60. My 1/2 hp Chinese motor was 3.6 amps this New to me motor is 10 amps and 1750 rpm and looks like a torque monster compared to the Chinese model . Photos to follow when I get a chance.
