I am new to making knives and have what probably is a basic question. Belt grinders have different size wheels, I assume an eight inch wheel is primarily for hollow grinding, is this the case? And if I am looking to make 17th and 18th century hunting and skinning knives do I require an 8" wheel?

An 8" wheel will make it easier to do standard hollow grinds on the average blade. If you don't have one, don't go out of your way (yet) to get one. You will just have to practice to get the grinds you want with what you have.

I may be wrong but I thought the production knives of that time we're ground on 3-5 foot diameter water wheels. and forged were beveled flat with a square flatter. Also all Wheels will produce a hollow grind.
