I was thinking about getting a grizzly belt grinder. Anybody use a grizzly grinder or any suggestions on ones to stay away from or look into getting?

Search in the knife makers section here on BF. Lots of discussion regarding this topic and lots of viewpoints.

If you are looking for a 1x42" belt grinder I am very pleased with my Kalamazoo. The platen behind the belt was made by me and is adjustable.

Yeah I have been looking into one like that and the grizzly which is 2x72. I just would like to know the pros and cons that everyone has had with theirs.

Although I've not owned or used the Grizzly, I think there are better values out there for just a little more money. You might take a look at the Polar Bear Forge sling kits, or for just a bit more money, go with a more versatile tool arm style grinder. Oregon Blade Maker sells wheels and chassis, Wilmont has the LB-1000, Pheer has several options, etc...

Lots of similar threads with good suggestions in the shop talk area of the knife making forum.

I will do that. I'm just trying to gather up as much information as I can before I pull the trigger on some things. And thank you I will look there

I've been down this road so I'll share what I've found. To get started you could grab a 4" sander with a disc, or a 1x42 grinder off craigslist. I see a couple pop up each month in my area. Set a craigslist alert for a search and you'll get an email when a new one gets posted. "Belt sander" will find more results than "belt grinder" but you have to weed out the hand held units. I picked up a 4" belt with disc for $30 (no stand) and a 1x42 for $150. Pic below to get an idea...

The downside of the 1x42 is I can't add 8 and 10" wheels for hollow grinding without modifications to the machine and stand. Plan on a 2x72 but you could at least play around with a 1x42. In my research on the forums many people subscribe to the "buy once, cry once" method of aquiring tools. Go high quality, get the right stuff, feel the pain. Good tools keep their value so treat them as an investment. The KMG-PL grinder comes highly recommended from many on the forums. You can buy a setup without a motor http://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=11 and source a used motor on craigslist. There are lots of options for modifying the KMGs to fit your needs too. Bader is also a good brand but a little pricey comparitively. The grinder and an anvil are the most expensive items you'll buy.

That's what I'm trying to do I don't want to buy something for 250 and it be deal and have to buy the right grinder when I could have just saved up a little more money and bought the right tool the first time. And I will check out setting alerts around Tallahassee, FL. And thank you for the information.
