what are the most common belt grits that you use. Im looking to stock up on some belts and im thinking if i had to choose 3 grits it would be 60 grit, 18o grit, and 220 grit. and i quess i would want some 400 grit also. would it be ok to go from 60 grit to 220 grit? or do i need something in the middle--thanks marekz

If you want to get rid of the 60g scratches then you go to 120-180-220 staying with each grit until the larger scratches have disappeared. Good luck, I started 66 years ago with an old farm peddle grinder. It has been a world of fun.

My standard rotation is 60 grit to 220 grit to 400 grit to 800 grit.
hope this helps

marekz,

Right now, the 4 most common grits I use are:

3M 36 grit Aluminum Oxide X weight
3M 120 grit Aluminum Oxide X weight
3M 240 grit Aluminum Oxide J Weight
3M 320 grit Aluminum Oxide J weight

Sometimes, I go directly to hand sanding after the 240 grit. It depends on how steady a grind I've completed up till that point.

40 for profiling and flattening, 80 for rough grinding the bevels, followed by 120 - 220 - 400 - Trizact A45 - A16. Then hand sanding from 240 to 1000 or 2000...
