Hey guys, Im new to the the Forum and whole knife making thing and just getting geared up to start making soon after I heal from a surgery. I found a belt sander on Craigs list that is a Dayton 1"x36" that is 3/4 hp. Its is listed for $125. Is this worth calling the guy and looking into or no?

Thanks in advance

Yeah i actually found a place that sells the 1x36 fairly cheap. Your place didn't even have the size. How fine of grit do you go up to on the belt grinder? The place I found got to like 380. Is that fine enough?

Don't make the same mistake I made when starting out, I bought a 4x48 belt "sander" which you can only find those brown belts to 320 grit, which are wood belts(I would use like 2 belts a knife at 8bucks a pop). Find a grinder size that you can find ceramic belts and the finer grit sizes in. A ceramic belt 2x72 will rough grind like 8-10 average size hunters and cost you 5-10 dollars depending on your grinder size. Try to find something in 1x42 1x30 and 2x72. You can find those sizes of belts from any online knifemakers store.

Thanks for the warning. Im looking into that 1x36. Its a weird size but i found a supplier that sells then cheap and they are ceramic.
