just a beginner and looking for a fairly reasonably priced belt sander to grind smaller blades with. maybe 1"X42" (grinder). there are a few options but none that i have found ahve variable speeds. how important is this?

any suggestions on what to use instead of expensive bader grinders? what are you using?

thanks.

A suggestion; one of my favorite pieces of (starter) equipment that I purchased is a 12" disc sander from grizzly. It's great for profiling blades and does an excellent flat grind. I purchased it for a little over 100 bucks. The link I believe is www.grizzly.com

The disc grinders are a seriously overlooked tool. If you go down a size to the 9" you'll be able to use sand paper with spray adhesive as well as the regular discs.

Get a Coote (good 2X72 upright). Those are very well made. If you are looking to spend a little more, go with the KMG.

Just spend enough to get something good or at least decent. Otherwise, you're really doing yourself a disservice.....

Does anyone know anything about the Suremak Industries 2x72 grinder? I found it on the web. It looks rather basic, but without a motor it's only $600.00 ( I saw the price of the KMG and kept looking !)

You can get a KMG without a motor what? $150 more??? Noone would ever say the KMG is a basic tool, if you can swing it, save the extra money and get the KMG. For $600 you could get a Coote and a decent motor for it.

The Grizzly disc sander was a fine suggestion. My first knife making grinder was a variation on this version. It was a 1" x 42" belt and 8" disc sander combo also from grizzly for around 140$. This weighs in at 1/3 hp and is capacitor start. Even if you do upgrade your equipment in the future this little workhorse will find a space in your shop. Any talk of a KMG will set you back a few thousand. It is no doubt worth it but you don't sound like that is the type of money you want to spend. Here is the link to that grizzly sander; http://www.grizzly.com/products/1-X-8-Belt-Disc-Sander/H8192
