I went to Ariel,s website and saw that he uses one of these I think instead of a 2x72. I found this expanding wheel that includes belts for only 23 bucks!! Iknow that it is only 6 inches but they make 8 and 10 inch ones as well. I thought I would show everyone this and see if it is a viable option until I can build my grinder. :D

I do most of my rough grinding on the wheel of my grinder, only switching over to remove the minor mistakes and using higher grit belts. Since the belt is shorter it will wear away faster and heat up faster. Go with the 10 inch wheel.

Thanks for the info. I am hoping that this may help those of us who cannot afford the big grinders.

Since I am new to this would you think that the belts would wear away too quickly? I can swing the 23 bucks for this but I don't want to waste money either. I am going to build the 2x72 but it may take a few months so in the meantime I thought this would do. I suppose that once I do get the 2x72 this one will be useful still even to use so I dont have to change belts so often or maybe for finer grits??

I appreciate every ones input since I came to this forum, The excitement is building, I can't wait to make my first "real" knife!

WHen you are researching a belt machine, make sure you can get atleast up to 400 grit, that way you can hand sand the rest of the way.

They do have 400. 5 belts for 9 dollars. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of picking it up so I can start asap.

Those type of expandable drums are standard use in the lapidary industry.
Give John Williams a call at Klingsopre. They carry the belts at a very cheap price.
