I'm thinking about building a 2×72 belt sander for knife making, and I've recently found a big part to that build. I've found a 5hp 3 phase motor on Craigslist for $125, and I'm thinking about getting it. Is this overkill and too powerful, or have I found a steal?

I think it's too large

The largest I've seen used are 3HP and the majority are happy with 2 HP

Things that will trip you up

Shaft size, unless you make your own drive wheel, the larger shaft size will not fit the wheels you can commonly buy

VFD, a 5 HP VFD will cost more than a 2HP,

Wiring, breaker size, that size motor will not work on the wiring and outlets you may have and will cost more than double, maybe triple than a 2 HP

Lots of new motors
