I'm looking to get a new belt sander and I need suggestions on what to get. It needs to be within the few hundred $ range. Thanks!

Scan ebay and CL I see craftsman 2 x 42's go through at a good price from time to time, stay away from harbor freight

For sharpening and light modification you can check out Viel. I've had the S-M-5 1x42 for a few weeks and love it. For making knives you may want something more.

There's a reason the HF is $40 and the Craftsman is triple that.
Both run very fast but the HF is pretty underpowered. General for and finish is quite poor. I own one and am impressed with it for the price but a quality grinder it is not.

Hey guys!
New to the forum, and to knife making. I'm looking for some advice on purchasing a belt grinder and more importantly belt width. I would like to keep my cost low (baby steps) and have found some nice products to practice with. Can you critic the size difference between 1" 2" and 4" belts? I have found a good price on 4" but wonder if that is too wide for achieving a good flat grind on most common blade sizes that I deal with (usually 5" and under)
Thanks,
I appreciate any guidance on the subject.

1-2" wide belts are a lot easier to work with. It's easier to focus on what you're doing if you're only doing it to part of the blade at one time. :)

Oh great, that craftsman looks great. Didn't know they made that one! Great price too.And it's got the work table.

Thanks so much for the replys!
