Hey guys,

I'm looking at possibly getting a better belt sander/grinder for grinding. I'm not sure what is best to get for a decent price. I have an old one that has a belt that is about 6-8 inches wide that I have been using that has an attached disk sanders (belt driven). It seems to be to large to grind on and the disk sander that is attached seems to get in the way.

What do you guys recommend I look into for my needs?

Any and all info is much appreciated.

Thanks

Sky

2x72 is generally the recommended choice in belt size. Beyond that, it depends on your budget. If you only have $600 to spend, then look at a Grizzly. If you have over a $1000 to spend then look at KMG, Wilton, Bader, etc.

Craftsman 2 x 72 (I believe) Grinder is considered to be a pretty decent entry level grinder, and can become a professional grade grinder through some modifications, such as slowing it down, etc.

Tha Craftsman is a 2 x 42", but it is a great starter grinder, especially with some modifications done. There have been a number of threads on that - do a search on here.

Craftsman 2x42 is the best budget grinder. Will run you around $120-150. Theres lots of mods you can do to improve it without breaking the bank. But if you got the money, go for the best grinder you can afford.

Probably one of the best values I've seen is building a No Weld Grinder Sander (NWGS). If you source your parts carefully you can easily get up and running for less than $300 and have a versatile and expandable machine that will run with the best of them.

Thanks guy. I have been looking it all up. I beleave in the long run I will go with the NWGS option when the money comes. for now I will just do some modifications (grinding rest, ect.) for the 4" x 30" combo I have. Was also thinking about that craftsman 2" x 42" and modifying that. We will see how the one I have works for me for now.
