Hey there gents,

Where can I find myself a nice quality belt sander, that isn't extremely expensive.

I'm talking about a bang-for-buck kind of deal. I want something that will work, and be good at it, but won't cost me a fortune.

Thanks. :)

What's your price range. Crafstman 2"x42" for $200 or a Coote for $700?

KMG for $1,300

Prices are approximate...

Probably somewhere around that craftsman range, I'm still JUST getting into knife making and don't need the best tools on the market right now.

Would you recommend the craftsmen?

I have a porter cable 4x36 disc/belt sander. It was just under $200. The belt it cam with broke in like 5 minutes though. But that's an easy find, it's been great for me so far.

Ive got the craftsman and although it has worked somewhat I have a really hard time getting a decent grind on anything I make. There are some mods you can do to it though that will help its function for knife making. One of which is to slow it down. I was going to do that but have since gotten most of the parts for my NWG setup. Just gotta start building it. There are several build yourself options that are really price efficient to get a pro quality knife grinder. My nwg is gonna run me about $500 I think with a 1hp motor on it. That is if the caster wheel I got works out for me, if not then a little more. Depends on where you can scrounge stuff from.

Craftsman 2x42 is the answer to your question. Search, there are multiple threads on this board about it. I have personally just passed my 200th knife on my 2x42. Yes, it's too fast, etc. but you can learn how to make it work.

Go with the Craftsman 2x42. It's a great machine, plus it will teach you how to grind. It doesn't matter what machine you use, your grinds will always come out bad if you don't learn to properly grind.

I'd recommend a NWGS build.... source the parts correctly and you can make it just about as cheap or expensive as you want. And when you're done, you have an upgradeable/expandable machine that'll grind with the best of them.

Belt grinders are for metal, sanders for wood.
I would go for the Grizzley knife grinder for a good entry level grinder. The Coote is a little more expensive but, is worth the $ too.
