I am trying to learn to grind with a Ryobi 4x32. I have read lots here concerning belt speed. Is there something I can use to slow down the belt speed that won't hurt the motor of this kind of sander?
It does have pulleys and a belt drive doesn't it? If so install a larger pulley on the sander or a smaller one on the motor. Of course you will need a different belt size. Frank
Yes it does have a belt and pulleys. I bought it last spring, used it almost a month, and the belt broke. Asked around, and found that I could only replace with a factory $30 belt. Fortunately, factory warrantied due to less than 30 days/unsatisfactory product. Where should I look for parts for a $100 bench sander?
I had a similar problem with a 4x36 King Canada belt sander I used to grind a couple knives. The belt on it completely lost all it's teeth. I just returned it to the place I bought it and got myself a 6x48 belt sander which works really well for grinding out blanks. Maybe a store like Princess Auto would have a small replacement belt like that, but I wouldn't count on it. The place you bought it should be able to order you parts. If not check out another supplier of the same brand sander.
I'm sure that belt could be replaced by one of the many industry standard belts and you will be able to find pulleys at an industrial supply house such as MSC. MSCdirect.com. You will need to know some dimensions. And if you're getting a new pulley (sheave) you may need to go up or down a bit in your belt length.
Ace hardware has pulleys and you don't need those notched belts. If your shafts don't fit the shafts, get pulleys with slightly smaller center holes and drill them out. Then with a small square file redo your key way. If you can't get a smaller holed pulley ge one slightly larger and a piece of copper tube that will slide in the pulley. cut out the keyhole slot and you have and adapter. Then JB weld it in place in the pulley and if it is a bit tight on the shaft drill or sand the it out a bit till it fits. A dowel with a slit sawed in it to hold a strip of emery cloth will do it when powered by a drill. . You might spend the $30 on 2 pulleys and a belt but then you have a good belt, speed you want and can replace it cheap.
