Belt spliter

On the Beaumont metal works website, they show splitting a belt by cutting the splice and then tearing it by hand. This seems like an effective (read cheaper) alternative.

I use an exacto knife, then tear by hand. has worked effectively(cheaply) for me.

Les,let me see if i can find a big 'ol block of micarta,or maybe something else could be used? If i could see some pics of those professional belt splitter dohickies i'm sure i could mill one out. Is it just a 2" slot milled out, with reversed top portion to hold the belt?

Someone made and posted one here. I think he used metal and it was a 2" slot with a lid like Bali said and it had a slot in it for a razor knife blade held in position by 2 allen screws

I'm with those who use the "grab and tear" method. It works well, and you can use the money to buy a more useful tool. I've been doing it for years, and can tear a belt to as small as 1/2" wide with no problems.

I just cut the splice and tear. Works great. I do this for contouring finger choils on handles. Sometimes, I even use 3/4" or 1/2" for some tighter areas.

Didn't know I was supposed to have a special tool to split belts. If I had one it would just get lost in the general confusion on the bench and I'd have to do it the old fashioned way...make a small slit in the joint and just tear off a chunk.

I tear regular belts and use scissors on film belts, if it's for slack belt use then I cut the belt with pinking shears to get a scalloped effect.
