WHat is the limit to which you can split a belt down? i know you can split em in half, but could you go even thinner? a 1/2 or 1/4 belt would be nice to get down into contours. Can you split it down thin, but run less belt tension to be on the safe side??

I have split emeroy cloth down to 1/8" to get into some tight spots but by hand sanding.you can always try and see,but be careful because it will cut grooves, even when done by hand. I can just imagine it under power.

Yes i would say its cool to do but be CAREFUL! as was stated im sure they will cut in pretty fast if your not careful. BTW I put those scales in the mail today, should be there by monday...ish lol

Cool Mike thanks! You guys have a great point, you would have to slow them WAY down or they would cut verry aggresively, which in some cases might not be a bad thing........ I'll try it out on some old belts.

The limiting factor that I have noticed is the stiffness of the backing.

Soft backings like "J" weight tend to roll when they get narrower than 1" but stiff backings like "X" weight will not roll.

Tension should probably be reduced a bit to avoid putting the narrrow belt under too much stress.

Cool, thanks guys. I was figuring i could lessen the tension a bit for less stress on the lighter backed belts.
