I just bought a coote and need some belts. I want to buy quality and will need the whole gambit from roughing to polishing. I have been doing everything by hand except roughing on a cheap ryiobi 4x36. Any suggestion on grit progression, brand, type, belt numbers ect would be greatly appreciated.

All I use for grinding are Norton Blaze Ceramic belts in 60 and 120 grit. For finishing belts, I use 3M gators at 180 and 240 grit. From there I put on a final finish of either hand sanding, Scotchbrite belt, or blasted/stonewash. It all depends on the knife and how I want to finish it.

+1 A very economical way to get a great finish, IMO. The blaze are good for several smaller knives, the gators are good for a hell of a long time, and I've head of one person who has used the same scotchbrite for 20 years. I need a blast cabinet like the cool kids.

I just wanted to point out when most people say "gator" they mean the 3M Trizact CF structured abrasive belts. I use them and they last a very long time and are well worth the cost. I also like how they stay flat on the platen better than other belts.

Do a search on the forum and you'll find a bunch of feedback on what belts and progression people use.
