I just set up my new grinder. It tracks very well and has a separate knob for tension. How much tension do I want? It isn't spring loaded like some I've seen. I must not be using enough because as I draw the blade across the contact wheel its pulling the belt over a little each pass.

Is there a ballpark rule of thumb for belt tension?

Thanks!

No guidelines for tension that I have heard, but I had the same problem with my Bader III at one time. I just adjusted the tension so that it did not do that anymore. ;) You will kind of get the feel of how much tension to put on the belt the more you use it. One thing that I have done with my Bader is to mark the attachment arm with some soapstone to know how far to put it in the slot. Not knowing what kind of grinder you have, it's hard to tell. If you post the brand, model etc. others may be able to help. -Matt-

Thanks grease-man,
I just tightened it a little by feel and it tracks nicely now...

If it is darn hard to remove/change the belt, cause it is too tight, then it is
too tight :) That's my rule.

I just use the rust line on my KMG tool arm :) Seriously though...i usually adjust until the belt cant be pushed left or right when spinning. Tighter with slack belting....

hears one i built for my surface grinder,,note the tracking knob on the back and the off set pivot axle
