Belt usage pre and post HT

I am at the point where I've got 20 blanks profiled out... All are 52100 and varying thicknesses and styles. I at the point where I am unsure of whether or not I want to grind any before heat treat.

I feel confident that I can keep them cool if I am grinding heat treated blades, but was primarily concerned about belt usage. I've got several good belts left .

Basically I am wondering how much belt life will change grinding 52100 from Aldo in its "natural" state vs a blank that has just been profiled and HT'ed by Peter's to 59-60RC. If there would be a rough estimate, would it be 1.5x faster wear? 2? 3? What are your thoughts?

Thanks ,

Not only will your belts wear out faster but you wont be able to use the ones that still have a bit of life left because they will heat up your steel too fast. How thick and how thin are your blanks? Anything 1/8" and over Id rather grind pre heat treat. Less than 1/8" is commonly done after.

I can't speak to 52100 because I have only used S30V, S35VN, and M390. I can say that I will go thru a 220 Trizact per 4" blade after HT. That is going from a .010 edge down to a .005 edge. Bottom line, after HT you are going to go thru belts like they are toilet paper. Bottom, bottom line - get as much grinding done pre-HT as possible. Ask Brad at Peters how thin an edge he can HT on 52100 and get it that thin pre-HT.

quoting the above, i also suggest to have the 52100 blades ht'ed to +60 hrc, being 61-62 a good working hardness for that steel
