Ben Seward Bowie WIP

Great work!

Can't wait to see how Ben does the handle.

Love your style, Ben!

Thanks for taking the time to photograph your process.

Thanks, Will. The handle pics should be up soon. All that's left is a little clean-up and the final sharpening. I think Dad is doing a WIP on the sheath as well.

Cool stuff guys, thanks for showing. I can't wait to see this one done either.

I had to smile here. I love the belt gouges in the side of the tool holder bracket. Haven't we all done that. :)

If it can go wrong it will, John. It's the life of a bladesmith...sometimes just enough goes right that a knife comes out!

Very impressive. Great flowing design well done. The small refinements, attention to detail really make it stand out. The WIP is especially educational for us non-makers. Thanks. Look forward to seeing the final product(s).

Sorry been slacking on the posting, this will be my last wip posts but then the fun part will start after I get it soon then the real fun will start. I will try to get photos of me testing and using and will update the thread.

When I saw ben’s knives for the first time one of the big things was his handles, I can tell they were meant to use and gonna be very comfortable and made to use:

Drilling the handle block. It has been rough profiled.

The fit-up. Holes for the alignment pins have been drilled at the top of the block.

The flats are ground then the top and bottom radiuses are ground

Make an oval on the pommel...(so my hand don’t slip when I go chop something)

Grind the swells with a 5 inch wheel.

Hand finishing

Glue up the guard...

Then the rest. I coat it with wax before epoxying.

So that the epoxy cleans up like this.

Drilling for the pin

This is my drilling set-up. The point below the bit orients the bit so that you now where the hole is coming out on the other side...not so many accidents that way. (The machinist in me cringes slightly, we gotta get this guy a milling machine. That being said I like the way he makes it work with what he has)

Here it is all pinned together. All it lacks is some clean-up and the final sharpening. Dad should have you some sheath pics in the next few days. (This almost isn’t fair but he sent it. Just wait till you see the next one)

So this is it, the last post. The talented Mr. Chuck Ward did a great job bringing this knife to light with his great photo. You also see the sheath that David, Ben’s father made for me. It is cow leather and shark, this is going to be used and so this was made with that in mind. The sharp eye will also note that the sheath is a leftie, after my accident I became 90% left handed so I had to figure that out after being right handed for the first 22 years of my life. Luckily, after some surgeries and time and some miracles I got back some of the use of my right hand so my battle belt set up is gun on right and knife on my left so hence the lefty sheath.

Ben, this has been an awesome experience, we clicked from the first time on the phone and this has come out better then I could have hoped. You have way too much damn talent for your age but luckily you are my friend so at least I get to take advantage of this talent. People get on this train because if you like this, wait till you see what Ben is going to do in 2014 and beyond. I’m beyond stoked that Ben and I have a few more projects up our sleeves.

That's a sweet blade and sheath. Thanks for the WIP thread.

My favorite of Ben's knives to date. (And I've liked all of them. :))

Great knife and thanks for posting all the pictures. I know it can be a lot of work taking the photos during the build. I like the file work on the ferrule it adds a lot with so little.

Steve

Really good job on an aggressive and sleek fighter, Ben. Very nice sheath, as well.

Congrats, and thanks for the WIP, Trevor.

John
