I am looking for a decent bench vice. I'm not a knife maker, just looking for something for general work. I was planning what I typically do when looking for tools and mosey on over to the local Sears and pick up a Craftsman model, but from the reviews I've read the Craftsmen strip out their screws pretty quickly. What does everyone recommend?

I really like my Wilton Tradesman... but I bought it used. They are definitely spendy to purchase new.

Hi Friend,

How big and heavy do you want it to be? What will you be doing with it? You might check Craigslist. I see them all the time on there. I have a few kicking around. If you don't want too big of one maybe I could get one in a $15 flat rate priority mail box. If you're interested let me know and I could see what I have, snap a photo or two and we could talk horse trading.

All the best, Phil

You might as well buy some files and some blade steel while you're at it.:D

The Wilton's with the double screw swivel base and replaceable pipe jaws are about as good a vise as is made. I can't remember the model number though and neither of mine have a number on them. They are definately high dollar. I kept my two from when I had my own business (not knife making) and they are as good as they were when new in the '70s. The Wilton Tradesman is a good vise too and not as expensive but a LOT more money than the Chinese vises.

I've always liked Record

now owned by Irwin tools (who also now own vise-grip)

I have 3 vises in my shop. they used to be 2 Irwins and a craftsman, but I managed to put a crack in the craftsman while using it as an anvil. Unfortunately the craftsman garantee doesn't cover vises so now its 3 Irwins.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!! Actually I want to at least buy a scandi blade from Ragweed and assemble a knife. But that's as far as it goes!!!!! I'm not listening!

The Irwin vice sounds like a pretty reasonable deal. I'll have to check those out. Thanks.

I love my panavise with the c clamp base. Not heavy duty by any stretch of the imagination, but portable and versatile

this is a picture of it in case the thread link dont work--thankz mark

I would go used Wilton tradesman. The 4" jaws should be enough for most jobs, and these things are built like a tank.
