My op was really more about the disbelief that normal bench mounted ones are not more common.... or even exist!!!

I always use a piece of 1x2 to clamp the blank to while Im filing but it always slips with pressure after a few minutes and its just such a pain to have to unclamp, readjust, reclamp and repeat after 15-20 strokes. trust me Iv seen the normal knife makers vises and other variations I was just asking if anyone knew if such a bench vise existed.

Maybe I will try to sink a screw just high enough on the spine side of the 1x2 to keep it from sliding back and see how that works. I havent been home very often recently so I do more thinking and wondering and asking than doing but works almost over for the season so I will have nothing but time to figure out some better ways of doing things.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I ended up making my own a little while back based off of some other designs I had seen. It swivels, clamps tight, and I can use any number of spacers inserts to hold what I want. I got the sanding jig from a very nice fellow forum member. It holds the tip and blade up while sanding which helps a ton. I had enough left over pipe that I made another one that just need a coat of paint.

Imagine this one has the handles attached already.

JatMat's g11

Basically ghost jade g10 :)

I got a big box of really thick pieces. It is great for jig making and such.

as in my pic, I use a piece of craft foam btw the blade and the supporting 'board'. It prevents things from moving around and only requires moderate pressure. I don't file, but I do sand pretty hard.

Haha. I cleaned it up a bit so I could take pictures for this thread and the shop pic thread.

BTW, not trying to sell in this post, but would there be any interest by anyone if I made a few more of these vises and listed them over in the for sale area?

I would take one in maybe month, getting shop back together but about to buy a 2x72 and that will break me untill i get some blades sold, that would be a big upgrade from what im used to, usually vise in a vise or 2x4 and clamp, you guys are uptown, i just finally got real forge, would go down on a lawman for a powerhammer, prob end up building one from junk, no shortage of that around here...
