Benchmade 10505 DPT vs. Coldsteel Master Hunter

Looking for a lightweight fixed blade knife for doing some bushcraft work and testing some survival skills stuff. I want a smaller knife, about 5 inches long. I would prefer a "plasticy" sheath for ease of cleaning but that is not absolutely necessary.

I sort of narrowed it down to 2 knives: Benchmade 10505 DPT or the Coldsteel Master Hunter.

Any thoughts about steel quality, cutting ability, comfort, quality, etc?

Thanks

I like the CS Master Hunter. It came sharp. The Sharpmaker made it scarey sharp. I save it for hunting trips, as a dedicated animal dressing tool.

My SAK and my Gransfors Bruks SFA take care of everything else.

Cannot comment on its durability, tho.

It is worth noting; I heard a nasty rumor that kydex shatters when dropped at very low temps. Anyone else know anything about this? Razor sharp knives become instant liabilities, when their sheaths shatter.

Sounds like you've already made your decision but I'd recommend getting a blade with a convex grind. Or, at least, you could put a convex edge on the Benchmade or Coldsteel. Check out this convex grind FAQ: http://home.nycap.rr.com/sosak/convex.htm

i've had a CS master hunter in carbon V for 16yrs now. great knife...mine came with a nylon sheath back then. dont know about the other knife you mentioned

I bought a Benchmade 10505 DPT and returned it because the blade was too thin! I now have a Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V that is my Survival Knife.

I have a Cold Steel Master hunter in Carbon V, I use a cheap little slide through sharpener I bought at a department store, and it is easy to sharpen and also keeps a good edge. A leather sheath came with it, but I made my own for it now. I have been using the knife for six years now.
Somebody mentioned the quality of Cold Steel Knives in general has declined. Anybody know any facts on this?

Not what you are thinking, but I saw a Strider in a local and wow, the spine was 1/2" thick for God's sake. You could use that damned thing to frame a house, or beat someone to death.. That is what is going to replace my Ka-Bar for sure!!!

Very good point. The Rant DPT has the deepest, thinnest hollow grind I've ever seen! About a third of the blade is paper thin, which makes it a superb slicer, but not well suited to hard use.

I'm on the fence about the Rant, can I ask you, did you mean to say "not well suited"?

I have both and it's true, the BM is a great slicer but a bit thin for the hard work. I don't do any type of torquing action with the BM because it's so thin.

I know what you mean... I just got an older CS TrailMaster, 5/16" at the guard and still 9/32" where the swedge begins. (In fact, it replaced my old Ka-Bar, heh). If it ever goes dull on me in a SD situation, I'll just whack my opponent upside the head with it. Might be a good tactic anyway, lol... "Look Officer, I COULD have chopped his head off, but I just knocked him silly instead" :)

Anyway, I have a Master Hunter on order, I think I'll like it. That Benchmade looks like a sweet knife too. What is "N690 blade steel"?

The 10505's thin edge is great for a special purpose hunting/skinning knife, but not for general bushcraft. If you like the design, but want something more rugged try a Buck Vanguard. The 10505 is a shameless copy of the Vanguard, but the original is heftier.

I can't speak about the Benchmade, but I'm on my second CS Master Hunter in ten years (lost the first one...Do any of the rest of you ever lose knives?). I really like it, takes and keeps a good edge. It's light and is my first choice to take into the woods.
