Benchmade 300SN arrived.

I finally picked up a BM 300SN today. I had handled one several times already, so the stubbiness and thickness of the knife are no surprise. My hands are fairly large, and for me the knife has a three finger grip. The fourth finger is comfortable on the the end of the knife, especially with a reverse grip. I think it is a comfortable pocket carry although it cannot compete with a knife like the Kershaw Knockout which has a longer handle and blade, but the Knockout disappears in my pocket. I agree that flipping this Axis lock knife is much different than flipping a knife like a Kershaw RAM or CKR&T Shennanigan, both of those knife fire out with a modest amount of effort. The 300SN requires a positive effort to flip out, but it requires no wrist action if the user has decent finger strength and technique. I guess it could open coming out of the pocket, but I don't think it would be that much of an issue.

I had just put it in my pocket while sitting on my bed. When it reached for it, I felt that sharp blade.

So the spine of the blade wasn't against the back of your pocket?

I hate to labor this but I don't want mine to open.

I carry mine with the spine of the blade against the back of my pocket and I can't make it open on purpose by pushing on the flipper so don't see how it can open on accident.

Now, if you have the flipper against the back of your pocket and nothing stopping the blade I can see it readily opening on accident.

Wow, I hope you guys don't use really complicated machinery like guns, or steering wheels. Seriously, the AXIS-Lock is easy to open. The flipper makes it even easier. Couple that with the fact that BM uses two sets of phosphor-bronze washers in the pivot and this thing opens very easily. If you don't like it, sell it or trade it. I love mine and it's yet to open by itself. Granted, I also carry AXIS-Assist and autos without the safety engaged and have still yet to have anything open in my pocket.

The spine was not against the back of my pocket. I am not a newbie when it comes axis locks. This is the first time I can think of that this has happened. My guess is that it was a fluke.

My guess is that it was NOT a fluke. Put your finger on the flipper and gently start to open the blade. Notice how little pressure you need to exert on the flipper to move the blade out of the handle just enough for the tip to bite you. It doesn't take much, does it?

Based on my own experience as well as what I've seen and read so far, button-lock and Axis-lock flippers are dangerous to the user if they're not carried correctly.

I don't think I would deep carry it in a pocket with a seam in it. The pressure of the seam against the flipper could be all you need to end up with a really bad hair day.

As a wise man once said, "once bitten, twice shy".

I can't wait to try this knife. It looks awesome and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow!!!

Carrying it, I think it makes a good EDC if you are not in dress pants. The flipper is what sold me on this knife, but a flipper is certainly not necessary for an Axis lock folder. I think the way a blade can fire out on a liner lock or framelock makes a flipper a little more fun on those sorts of knives.

That is why I never tried an Emerson. I thought the wave feature would cause the blade to deploy even if you did not want it to, snagging your pocket. Guess that is what it is supposed to do, but not something I want.

No Emersons for me neither. I've seen what the wave feature can do to a pants pocket and it's not pretty.

Right. I have had several accidental wave openings with Emersons. BTW/FWIW, I've had a few with Spyderco folders with the "Cobra Hood" as well. :(

I have only been bitten once on a non-wave deployment. The experience taught me to make sure a finger was on the end of the blade, to prevent it opening if the wave is unintentionlly snagged on a pocket. Make it a habit and you will never have another problem.

Good suggestion- thanks!

Just got mine and I am loving it so far. After reading some of the threads while this was in transit, I was getting kind of nervous. So now, here it is in my hand and I am very relieved and happy. I like the way it sits in my hand though I don't have big hands. It feels lighter than its spec. and carries very comfortably in my jeans pocket. It appears to be built very solid and looks like it could take a kicking. I really love the handle on this thing, they've done a very nice job on the G10 scales.
I mostly like to carry bigger guys around like my 0560 or my trusty CQC-8 So I figured on going with a smaller yet sturdy one for a change now and again. This looks as though it will fit the bill.
Oh yes, nice fondle potential here, I am digging this flipper with the axis lock.
Cheers.

I agree that the BM 300SN is safe. Now that I have carried it a day, I can't imagine it being different from any other Axis lock Benchmade that I have had before.

call me crazy, but that blade dosn't turn me on... It looks too darn bulky for what it is and seems like it could have a hotspot during hard use.. but hey.. what do i know i dont own one!
