Why did Benchmade choose to spring-assit an axis lock. I was fondling the 470 at Cabelas today and it is an awesome folder, but then I flicked it open. The spring-assist is slow as nards, I can flick a Griptillian and a 707 open quicker than the spring assist.

For the love of all things holy, produce one without the spring assist.

The only one I have toyed with in a store fired open extremely fast, it sounds like the one you were looking at may be gummed up or needs cleaned/lubed a little?

I had a 470 for about a year and rarely used it because I really didn't like the spring-assist. Not bad for opening the knife, but a pain for closing. Once you get used to opening/closing an axis lock knife its faster than any assist.

The assist on this one reminded me of SOGs assist. Both are very slow compared to Kershaw's.

I bought dwcliff's 470 :), and already sold it because I didn't like the spring assist. I posted a thread asking if it can be removed but apparently it is not advised with this model. The spring assist worked well on this one though, flew out as fast as any of my Kershaws. I think of this knife as more of a "gentleman's EDC" in which case the assist makes little sense, IMO.

The one I fondled must of been slow b/c it was a display model. It is a lovely knife, I'd buy it if it didn't have a spring-assist. Axis lock and spring assist don't jive in my book.

If you can I would recommend checking another dealer. The 470-1 has a great kick to it for its size. If adjusted properly it will fire fast with a great snap sound.

I really like my 470. The spring assist was one of the primary reasons i bought it. Never gonna sell it :D

I saw one these yesterday at a gun shop that has a pretty nice display case full of Benchmades. I wanted to look at it but the people behind the counter were so busy filling out paperwork for newly sold guns, I didn't get the chance. I currently use either my 940 Osborne or my Bradley Alias I more or less for a "gentlemen's" folder as both are light but have nice blades. Looking for something a bit smaller, so the 470 caught my eye. I didn't realize it was assisted, but this wouldn't stop me although I think it is redundant on an axis lock knife.

I love Osborne designs. The 470 is a gem and the perfect Gent's knife being so small, even the clip works well. I agree the safety isn't needed and haven't heard of any of these opening by accident, but it's still a cool feature. The gun show was busy huh? I'm not surprised knives at the show weren't the priority given the current atmosphere. But even the best gun can be complimented by a quality knife as a backup!

Well, it was just a gun shop, not a gun show. I've avoided gun shows for many years. :)

Doh! Yes I read show instead of shop. Time for another cup of tea...! ;) On gun shows though, the big one here in SF is at the Cow Palace in April and I've found some really interesting Benchmades there over the years, but you really have to know what you're looking at and be willing to walk away if the deal isn't in your favor. Cheers! :)

I have also been considering this knife for a long time. With ought the spring assist and the safety it would be a awesome knife. Knives really should come with a spring assist option like a serrated/plain edge or coated/satin option.

^ I also live in Walnut Creek. What a small world.

Maybe the pivot screw was just too tight. It should be pretty fast since the blade is relatively small.

That's agreed, small world in fact! FYI - Walnut Creek is apx. 30 miles inland from San Francisco and at the base of Mt. Diablo. It's pretty out here and surrounded by parkland both state and county run. With three Gold class Benchmade dealers within driving distance it's got a lot going for it.

On topic...A friend removed the spring and safety from his 470 and said removing the parts was worth it, but was a bear because the works are so compact. Never mind the warranty issue though, to him it was worth the effort to make the knife his.

My dad's 470 is practically an auto...the first time I opened it before I gave it to him for Christmas I nearly dropped it because I didn't expect it to be twice as fast as my 890 Nitrous assist. Something was wrong with the knife you held.

I absolutely love my 470-1

Extremely fast, basically an auto with axis lock. I absolutely love the blade shape, the deep pocket clip and the super light aluminum handles. My favorite benchmade folder by far!!!!

i purchased a barrage because i wanted an assist and i didn't understand why so many people preferred nonassist knives. but after a few short weeks of collecting i got faster at opening knives and wasn't sure how much trust to put into the springs on an assist. i felt like it was just something that would break after time. so now i'm like most of the members here and prefer nonassist blades, although i did love how the barrage flew open with that "thwack!" i would love to handle the 470...it looks like a really great knife. i actually didn't know it was an assist, but if i had to choose a new assist i'd definitely give that one a go.
