I am looking to buy my first quality Balisong and needed some advice. I have had a cheap one that I learned the basics on that fell apart. But now I'm hooked. I wanted to keep it under 250 and I was looking between the Benchmade 51 and the quartermaster mcfly. I know the Benchmade is a quality flipper but the quartermaster comes with the training blade. I think that would be better but I don't know how durable the handle system is. Any advice would be great thank you

personally not a fan of quartermaster folders, or balis or anything they make.......i don't own their bali's so i could be completely insane saying i prefer the benchmade....you might ask a mod to move this into the bali section, where you will get many better answers. good luck....

I think the Marty mcfly has the best intentions but because of the quick change feature, there is never going to be the ability to tighten down the handle when they come loose.

Also the handles are geared more towards style versus ergonomic
In my opinion, they look horrible and uncomfortable.

I'd go with the Benchmade.

That warranty is amazing.

It's like having a pitcrew.

Hey Alpine,

Nice to know more people are picking up flipping but IMO spend a little more for the BRS Replicant. It is a far better flipper than either of the two you mentioned and if you are ever worried about practicing with a live blade, just tape it up :p

Wafflez, is the brs that much better than the bm 51. And all I can find is the g10 replicant. I was also gonna use it for a fun Edc knife. Thanks for the help as well Deadbox

Quartermaster has a pretty bad reputation on the forum, so I suspect most will recommend Benchmade. Design aside, Benchmade has a proven reputation as a quality company with great customer service. I don't know about Quartemaster. Besides Benchmade started out making Bali songs... Check it out

The Rep is a MUCH BETTER flipper than the 51 and worth the extra $40. But if you are going to EDC the bali than I think the 51 would be more useful with the spring latch. From a flipping perspective, Rep all the way.

One company values intelligent designs, and has outstanding business ethics (hint it's Benchmade)

The other.....well.........

I'm pretty happy with my BM51. I did pick up a set of Flytanium scales for it though. The Replicant came out after I bought the 51 and I don't have one to compare the two. One video review I watched claimed that the tip of the Replicant's blade broke TWICE when dropped while flipping. The guy reground the tip to approximate a BM47's. It looked very cool after the regrind.

I can't believe this a serious question???

I mean, if you want a QTRM5TR, and think they look cool or whatever the reason, then by all means, have it...

If you would even think to compare QTRM5TR to Benchmade, company for company, product for product, you need to do more homework before asking the question...

+1 how is qtrmstr even in a comparison to bm? I wouldn't pay to ship a qrtrmstr to my house if the knife was free.

Benchmade makes some great knives.

The only reason i was comparing it to the benchmade was the price. I havent really heard about quartermaster before. I thought that if a company was asking 250 for a knife it was quality. I think Im going spend the extra money and get a brs replicant.

BM51
If in the future you decide that you want/need to change the dynamics of how it flips, you could always install a set of Ti scales. I has re-anodised mine, but still running the factory scales because they work so well as a package.

Hahahajahahaha! Ok, sorry OP, but these are not comparable. The benchmade 51 has pretty much set the standard for balis to this day. Quartermaster has set the standard for questionable product origin and ethics. I won't even tell you get the BM. But I will tell you DONT get the quartermaster!

Money doesn't always equal quality, but does ensure someone will get your money. Make sure you know who you are dealing with.

I would take a Benchmade anything over a QTRMa5T3R (or however their dumb name is spelled) anything, any day of the week.

Well thanks for keeping us informed.
