Benchmade 551 Griptilian or Kershaw Cyclone??

grip all the way.had a kershaw one time and was a good knife but ended up trading it and keeping the gript:)

Depends what you want, both are excellent knives. The Grip is a lot lighter and opens fast, but the Cyclone flipper is awesome and is one of those knives that your friends are going to say " Whoa, what kind of knife is that!!" If you want a knife that is a little smaller but a good carry, look at the Kershaw Blackout it has speed safe opening and is a good EDC. Here's a link:

BTW Kershaw DOES NOT suck !!!

I prefer 13C26 (especially the way Kershaw heat-treats it) over 154CM and have been sour at Benchmade since late 2003 (won't buy another one of their knives) and I'd still go for the Griptillian.

I have to agree. I also prefer Kershaw's 13C26 over 154CM. However, I also had both a MiniCyclone Ti-ZDP and a Ritter MiniGrip. I traded the Cyclone. It was just a little too bulky and heavy for me.

Which do you guys think will hold the sharpest edge longer?? I will be cutting cardboard, plastic, stuff like that. I sharpened my gerber today and after cutting four corners off of one carboard box it had lost the ability to shave hair. And it wasnt shaving much hair anyway. So my biggest thing is carrying it for cutting things like that. Also for protection, just to have something other than my hands. But you guys know what im talking about.

154CM is great stainless steel.

Very interested, though, in hearing (reading) the responses of those who like the 13C26 better.

If the little Cyclone is too bulky & too heavy for you, you should handle a Zero Tolerance ZT 0200...The ZT is a TANK of a folder, compared to the little, light-weight Mini-Cyclone.:D. My EDC is a Mini-Cyclone and a ZT 0200, and I don't feel that either one is "too" bulky or "too" heavy...Both instill alot of confidence in their ability to handle anything I can toss at 'em.

I don't like liner locks or aluminum, so the Grip is my choice. However, if you are willing to pay for the Ti frame lock Cyclone, then I would take the Cyclone by a large, large margin.

I would choose the griptillian EVERYTIME. I love the axis lock and prefer 154cm.

The sandvik steel is easier to sharpen and the ao is nice but the axis lock is just as fast.

I have had two problems with the kershaw cyclone. One the blade rusted two days after i got it and it didnt even get wet and secondly the position of the pocket clip makes too much of the knife stick out of my pocket.

Yeah I went and put my hands on some kershaws last night. I found a place locally that sells benchmades so im going by there today to put my hands on them and check them out in my pockets and all that. Thats the reason I asked you guys last night about the blades and their edge retention. That is something i dont know anything about, unfortunately, but plan to keep reading here so I can learn. I really appreciate you guys help.

I just picked up BM 14460 the Nitrous Blitz (it's part of their HK line) and I'm liking it a lot because it's light at 2.7oz, thin, has 154cm steel, a titanium liner lock, at 3.4 inches is plenty big for my needs, and has a G10 handle. I'm really liking the assist mechanism on it.

It feels like an auto and I can carry it without worry that it's going to come open in my pocket or need for a safety because you have to engage the blade 30 degrees before it kicks in.

They're both good however I think it depends on how big your hands are or how big you want your knife. Personally I'd suggest the Ritter Griptilian and don't look back.

Another vote for the Grip. Both knives are fine. I bought a Grip awhile back based on the Axis hype and a couple of AOs for their hype and the novelty from the AO wore off quicker for me. I don't care either way for a flipper.

If your not thinking about the Mini Cyclone TiZDP, then get the Grip. The Liner lock on the Cyclone is the deal breaker IMO. The Axis lock is said to be one of the strongest available, as well as one of the most fun:D. Now the Mini ZDP Cyclone on the other hand has a Ti framelock, which is also a rock solid lock...but it is over 2x the cost of the Grip. I don't thnk you'll find a better knife out there, at the Grips pricepoint.

Guys I just ordered the mini grip. I went to marks outdoors a local hunting shop here, and got my hands on both of them. The big grip was a little big for me to EDC, plus im not going to be skinning a deer everyday as the guy there described it could do. I put the mini in my hand and really like it. Oh and glockman I even got to get my hands on the large cyclone seeing the AO on the net is really cool. Also flipping them open is cool too I like it, but i dont like the fact it could pop open in my pocket. So like kaizen it wore off for me. Im looking forward to getting it, thanks so much for you guys help this is an awesome forum and glad to be a part of it now.

I have handled both, and I think these are knives you definitely need to handle in order to make a decision. The blade steels are comparable, but the blade shapes are quite different. I've never liked aluminum handles, and I'm not a big fan of liner locks, but I love the feel of the mini-cyclone in the hand - enough so that it is high on my want list right now. With the grip, I know I am in the minority here, but I hated the feel of the handle. However, I like the axis lock much better than the liner lock on the cyclone.

For me, the feel of the knives in my hand leads me to pick the cyclone. I think you should handle both, and consider the strength of the lock (BM axis being stronger, but the liner being good enough for most light tasks), before making a decision.
