I held this knife today in the plain edge. It seemed like a very nice knife for my purposes and almost seemed like too good of a deal to be true. I like this knife more than the simular spyderco's. I dont know anything about their locking mechanism or the blade steel that they used. However it seemed very solid and smooth. Would this make a good strong knife for EDC and for general outdoor use?? It seemed like a good price and a solid name-brand.

The 551 makes a great EDC for general use at home and in camp. The lock is solid and easy to operate, and the version you looked at probably has a 440C blade, which is a solid performer. Not the latest and greatest supersteel, but a solid performer. According to the BM website, they are upgrading the steel in the standard model to 154CM. And if that isn't enough for you, Cabelas offers a version in D2, and Aeromedix offers special editions with a modified blade shape in S30V and M2. You could make a whole collection of Griptilians.

Definately, the Griptilian's axis lock is one of the best lock mechanisms out there. BM uses 154 CM steel, it's a good steel and furthermore, Benchmade does a great job with it. Plus the clip is very accommodating and as the name states, it has a good grip.

I have two. Good knives and I use them a lot. The one downside is that the grip pattern and the clip arepretty tough on the pants where they meet. A little wear on the handle and that's not a problem anymore.

The Griptilian is one of THE best knives on the planet. Can't beat it for $60.

Plus the new ones coming out are in 154CM. The current ones are 440C and are outstanding. Benchmade does an excellent job with their 440C.

Buy one man. Good stuff!

I have a 550 Griptilian and also a 552 Ritter Grip (RSK MK1) and I love 'em both.

I also have two grips--a 550S and a Ritter full-size...

The BM Griptilians series are THE BEST KNIFE VALUE OUT THERE!

US Made, Axis lock, 440C is a good steel--you can opt for the Blackwater in 154CM, Cabellas's grip in D2, Ritter in S30V and now M2...

Great knife - I've EDC'd one for over a year. Only complaint is the "weighting" - where the blade half is heavier than the handle.

The new Griptilians have 154cm steel, is this better than the 440c steel they used to use on the old ones?? Can anyone reccomend a place to order the new or old ones online for a good price?? Thanks

Very good knives! Durable, effective and cheap. For their price I dont think their is a better knife on the market.

I've carried a Grip 551 for about 18 months now and haven't had a single problem with it. It takes an edge well, it keeps it without much trouble. I don't do a lot of heavy cutting with it, mainly opening boxes and letters, but when I ended up selling christmas trees for a few weekends with my family it performed wonderfully on rope and small limb alike. When my current grip needs to be retired I'll probably end up replacing it with the same thing.

Holy Crap! Benchmade no longer offers Olive-drap fine edges! And cabelas has them in D2? Im all over that!

I have 2 models, a small blade and a larger blade. They are extremely well made, and one thing for sure, out of the box they are very sharp. I have several other knives with the 154cm steel, however I couldn`t say if it`s a better steel,as the 154cm steel is very sharp also.

I have several; plain edge and combo edge. All of mine came from Cabelas www.cabelas.com as their version (which is a Benchmade) is in D2 steel. Argueably the best knife out there for the money.

Yes, it makes a nice EDC. I have the 550 and the mini-Grip from Cabelas in D2. The Grips and mini-Grips are excellent knives. A lot depends on which size you prefer for EDC. Handle both then decide.
