I would like to get a Benchmade 580 Barrage but I don't want the assisted opening feature. It seems like it would be a simple spring removal to convert it to a standard axis lock, has anyone done this?

I haven't done it, but I HAVE taken one apart. It's a lot easier than a normal axis lock thanks to the hidden pivot pin.

Someone sold a Barrage with the spring taken out on the exchange, so it certainly can be done.

The axis lock is what acts as the detent, so yes it stays closed. :)

That's my biggest concern. The Kershaw Blur relies on the assisted opening spring for blade retention while it's closed.

"Speedsafe" is different. It is both the opening force as well as the closing force. I don't think the same applies to all AO systems.

Is this statement based on theoretical or first hand knowledge?

I've taken apart axis lock Griptilians and agree that it appears likely that the assisted opening spring and axis lock operate independently, or in concert with one another.
That is a theoretical hypothesis however so I'm still waiting to hear from someone that has actually deactivated an axis lock assisted opening Benchmade, successfully.

axis knives stay closed thanks to the axis, my 950 and 550 stay closed
my blur without the SSafe stays closed very well both tip up/down

Personal experience. I popped one apart for a guy because it wouldn't stay closed. The problem was that the spring was too strong and overpowering the detent action of the axis lock. He then got it replaced by Benchmade (after my careful and spotless reassembly of course!) :D

It sounds like a spring removal reverts an assisted opener back to a standard axis lock knife. Thanks FortyTwoBlades, and everyone else who responded.

I did this very same thing, removed the spring from my full size barrage. Very ez to do and I like it alot better as a manual axis lock Benchmade. EZ to remove and therefore EZ to replace:thumbup::D

But would the blade stay closed without the spring?

I bought a 585 with ao removed from the boards (not sure if it is the one that is being referred to).

Compared to my mini grip, the actual lock is smoother, they both are not flickable if the lock is not pulled back. The additional locking pin thing to prevent the axis lock from moving still works.

If I didn't know it was supposed to be an AO, i would never have guessed it was any different than my mini grip.

I am debating trying to put it back in.

I've done it, the spring can be very easily removed, you'll get a normal (and fast opening) axis-lock folder.
