I have this knife in D2. It works very well. I have a 712 in M2 as well, and it works good too! The M2 is harder to sharpen, but does not seem to hold an edge any longer than D2. D2 is more rust resistant and M2 is tougher, or so I've been told. You'd be well served owning a 710 in either steel.
Of course all of the M2 blades have a coating of some kind so rust resistance is enhanced.
You will be well served by any of the three you just need to decide which is right for you. I have never had a problem sharpening any of the but the same list for edge retention would also apply to difficulty sharpening. If you're concerned about your sharpening skills you may want to consider that.
In real world use you may only notice marginal differences between the three - I tend to use D2 or M2 for my really harder use knives but have beat the crap out of ATS/154's and they hold their own.
